API keys
Personal API keys for scripts and MCP clients that can't sign in with a browser: creating, limiting to gateways, using and revoking them in Open MCP Portal.
A personal API key (omp_…) lets a script, curl or an MCP client that can't open a browser call your gateways. It acts as you: it reaches the gateways you can use, with your access, checked on every request. For interactive clients, prefer OAuth sign-in; for automation that mustn't depend on you, use a team service account.
Your keys are under Account › API keys (the menu under your name).
Create a key
Choose Create API key and fill in:
- Name: where you'll use it, for example "Claude Code on my laptop". When a request doesn't carry the MCP client's own name, call records and MCP servers see the key's name as the client.
- Expires after (days): keys always expire, from 1 to 365 days (90 by default). Create a new one when it does.
- Limit to gateways (optional): the key then works only on those gateways, and only while you can use them. Leave it empty to use the key on every gateway you can use. A limit never gives you more access. At most 50 gateways.
The secret is shown once, right after creation: copy it then. Under Connect a gateway you can pick one of your gateways and get its snippets; Put this key into the snippets fills in the real key (only on that screen: anyone who sees the snippets can use the key).
Use it
Send it as a bearer token to a gateway's URL:
curl -X POST https://mcp.example.com/mcp/support \
-H "Authorization: Bearer omp_..." -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'The client snippets with Use an API key instead turned on show the same for Claude Code, VS Code, Cursor and pi. See Connect your AI client.
API keys work only on /mcp/{slug}, not on the management API.
The list
Each key shows its status (Active, Expired or Revoked), when it was last used, when it expires, and where it works: All my gateways or the gateways it's limited to. A gateway that was deleted is marked; a key whose gateways are all gone works nowhere, and the page warns about it. Revoked and expired keys stay listed for 30 days.
Revoke a key
Revoke stops the key at once: clients and scripts using it fail on their next request. It can't be undone.
When a key stops working
A key is refused (401) once it's revoked or expired, or when you're suspended. It doesn't see a gateway (404) when you lose access to it: you leave the team, a grant is removed, or the gateway is turned off. A key limited to other gateways also gets 404.
Keys are stored only as keyed digests; nobody, including platform admins, can see a key after it's created.
